Welcome back to the ‘Graveyard of the Atlantic’!

The North Carolina Maritime Museum on Hatteras has completed its extensive renovation and complete redesign of its lobby and exhibit spaces. The new gallery is a showcase of state-of-the-art features and interactive elements that bring our coastal history to life. And you can be among the first to experience it when you join us for our Grand Reopening on May 20 (or for members of our Friends of the Museum, a special preview the week before). Our opening schedule is below.

May 20

10 a.m. Museum opening ceremony

10 a.m.-4 p.m. Museum open to the public

10 a.m.-4 p.m. North Carolina Aquariums’ Aquatic Wildlife Inhabiting Shipwrecks (hands-on activity)

11 a.m. “U.S. Life Saving Service Operations along the North Carolina Coast” (lecture)
Join North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort Education Curator Benjamin Wunderly to learn about the history of U.S. Life-Saving Service operations, the precursor to the United States Coast Guard.

1 p.m. “The History of the Oldest NC State Law Enforcement – 200 Years of Service (1822-2022)” (lecture)
Join Captain Christopher Lee, NC Marine Patrol D-1, NC Division of Marine Fisheries to learn about the state’s longest-serving law enforcement agency.

2 p.m. “Brigadier General Billy Mitchell: Father of the U.S. Air Force and Hatteras Hero” (lecture)
Join Danny Couch to learn about the man considered by aviation historians as the most polarizing airman this country has ever produced. Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell is, nonetheless, regarded as the father of the United States Air Force and an icon in American aviation history. Aviation experts often question why General Mitchell chose to conduct his historic strategic bombing experiments at Hatteras, and the answer is simple: He liked to fish.

May 21

10 a.m.-4 p.m. Museum open to the public

10 a.m.-4 p.m. North Carolina Aquariums’ Aquatic Wildlife Inhabiting Shipwrecks (hands-on activity)

11 a.m. “North Carolina Whales: Diversity, Distribution and Conservation” (lecture and hands-on display)
Join North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort Natural Science Curator and Director of Bonehenge Whale Center Keith Rittmaster to learn about the whales most commonly spotted off the coast of North Carolina and to handle some related display items.

2 p.m. “John Rollinson: Hero of Hatteras Island” (lecture)
Join Danny Couch to learn about John Wallace Rollinson (1827 -1906), a fascinating figure in the history of Hatteras Island. Hatteras’ first paid schoolteacher, collector of the Port of Hatteras and reluctant Civil War outlaw, Rollinson’s legacy has stood the test of time.

May 22

10 a.m.-4 p.m. Museum open to the public

11 a.m. “Women in Whaling” (lecture)
Join North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort Associate Education Curator Christine Brin to learn about the women who participated in the historic whale fishery.

May 23

Join Hatteras native Scott Dawson to learn about the English who attempted to colonize the New World in 1587 and the mystery surrounding their disappearance.

May 24
