Rev. Bart Muller is a descendent of First Lieutenant Rudolph, First Sergeant Theodore, and Private Wilhelm Beutler, who, as members of the 20th New York United Turner Rifles, participated in the landing and battles of Forts Hatteras and Clark. The 20th was one of a large number of foreign-speaking regiments raised in New York and throughout the Union.  Originally from the lower East Side of New York City, these regiments reflected the struggle and pushback, and desire to fit into the life of America.  Rev. Muller will discuss the origins of the Turner movement, German nationalism, immigration and this hard luck regiment and its history after Hatteras.

The presentation is part of the museum’s Salty Dawgs Lecture Series, which features presentations on North Carolina maritime history and culture. The series, which is sponsored by the Friends of the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required. Call 252-986-0723 for more information.
